Texas DNC Delegates Overwhelmingly Support Kamala Harris After Biden Withdraws
By Jasper Scherer and Renzo Downey, The Texas Tribune.- In a swift reaction to President Joe Biden’s exit from the 2024 presidential race, Texas DNC delegates held a vote, overwhelmingly endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as their candidate. The vote, 260-6 in favor of Harris, reflects a decisive move by the state’s delegates to rally behind a new leader for the Democratic Party. This majority support from one of the largest delegations at the convention signals a significant endorsement for Harris, aligning with Biden’s own support. The Texas delegation, comprised of 273 members ranging from grassroots activists to high-ranking officials, demonstrated unity in their early commitment to Harris’ candidacy. The formal nomination process is pending, with detailed voting procedures expected to be announced by the Democratic National Committee. Harris’ emerging support suggests she may avoid a contested convention, positioning her as the likely Democratic nominee to face the Republican challenger.
Texas GOP Leaders Criticize Harris on Border Security, Predict Electoral Gains
By Zach Despart, The Texas Tribune.- Following President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek reelection and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, Texas Republican leaders have intensified their critique of Harris, especially regarding her role in immigration policies. At a press conference, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz and other GOP officials condemned Harris’s handling of border security, attributing a surge in illegal immigration to her policies. They argue that Harris’s management of immigration issues has led to increased Republican support in historically Democratic South Texas regions. This narrative underscores the GOP's strategy to frame Harris as ineffective on border security as she likely becomes the Democratic nominee for president. Texas leaders are using this stance to mobilize their base by highlighting the perceived failures of the current administration’s immigration policies, suggesting that Harris’s election would exacerbate these issues.
Ciudad Juárez Residents March for Answers in Four Disappearances
By Paola Gamboa, El Universal.- In Ciudad Juárez, families took to the streets demanding answers and action from local authorities regarding the disappearance of four individuals this year. The peaceful protest, which unfolded along Avenida Tecnológico and Boulevard Zaragoza, featured participants holding banners and photos of the missing: Fernanda Anahis Molina Vázquez, David Alejandro González González, Brandon Alexis GarcÃa Jiménez, and Carlos Iván Cervantes Sierra. The demonstration highlighted the community's frustration over the lack of progress in these cases, with some family members expressing concerns about the transparency of the ongoing investigations. Notably, the protesters included José Luis Castillo, the father of Esmeralda Castillo, who vanished 15 years ago in the same city. In a striking display of determination, a segment of the crowd marched to Chihuahua City to escalate their plea directly to Governor Maru Campos and Attorney General César Jáuregui Moreno.
