๐ฅ๐ PBS Documentary "The In Between" Challenges Negative Depictions of U.S.-Mexico Border
By Deborah Martin, Staff Writer. โ Filmmaker Robie Flores seeks to counter media and political portrayals of the U.S.-Mexico border with her documentary The In Between, airing on PBS' "Independent Lens". The film captures life in Eagle Pass, Texas, showcasing youth culture, community events, and family bonds, moving beyond narratives of crime and immigration crises.
The documentary premiered at SXSW and won Best Southern Feature at the New Orleans Film Festival. It follows border teens through rites of passage, from football practice to quinceaรฑeras and high school graduations, emphasizing the fluidity between Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras, Mexico.
Flores, alongside her brother and cinematographer Alejandro Flores, dedicated the film to their late brother Marcelo, integrating his footage into the narrative. The film aims to celebrate border culture and inspire pride among border communities.
