Paxton Intensifies Legal Pressure on El Paso Nonprofit Serving Migrants
Alejandro Serrano and Vianna Davila, The Texas Tribune.- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has targeted the El Paso-based nonprofit Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, intensifying his scrutiny of organizations providing services to migrants. This marks at least the fifth inquiry by Paxton's office into immigration-focused nonprofits within the state this year. The latest probe accuses Las Americas of violating consumer protection laws. In response, the nonprofit, supported by the Texas Civil Rights Project, has filed a lawsuit to halt the investigation, arguing it infringes on their First Amendment rights. Las Americas, known for its longstanding service to migrants, challenges the state's claims as unfounded, asserting the actions disrupt their vital work. The conflict represents a broader trend where Paxton's office has targeted groups advocating for policies contrary to his political agenda.
Paxton Investigates El Paso Nonprofit, Legal Battles Erupt Over Migrant Aid
By Robert Moore, El Paso Matters.- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is intensifying scrutiny over nonprofits assisting migrants, particularly targeting the El Paso-based Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center. This follows his broader pattern of investigating immigration-related organizations. Las Americas, recognized for aiding immigrants for over 37 years, has responded by filing a federal lawsuit to block Paxton's demand for records tied to the Biden administration’s parole policies. This legal action asserts that Paxton's investigation infringes on their First Amendment rights and disrupts their mission to support vulnerable migrants. This lawsuit represents one of several confrontations between Texas officials and nonprofits involved in immigrant services, reflecting a significant escalation in the state’s approach to immigration advocacy organizations.
